Tips for the Prevention and Cure of Toenail Fungus

There is no need to run around with nail fungus as there are simple toenail treatment options that work.

The medical term for the fungal infection that affects both the fingernails and toenails is onychomycosis. While this condition affects both the fingernails and toenails, it is much more common in the toenails. There are some symptoms to watch for that may indicate that a toenail fungus infection is present.

Common symptoms include, but are not limited to; discolouration (mostly white or yellowing), brittle, thick, lifted from the toe, crumbly and sometimes curled up or down or are distorted in shape. Certain symptoms may also cause the sufferer some degree of pain depending on the severity of the infection.

Anybody, no matter what their sex or age is can contract a fungal infection that affect the toenails. However, studies have shown that the symptoms of toenail fungus infections are most common in people over 60 years of age. It is also known that individuals that suffer from circulatory or respiratory diseases have a higher risk of developing this condition. Diabetes is another common condition that is associated with toenail fungus.

Many times it\’s difficult to determine exactly what causes a toenail fungus infection. Sometimes its even difficult to even notice that an infection is present. If you suspect that you have a toenail fungus, you should visit your physician for a diagnosis. Your doctor will be able to identify the exact infection you have and recommend the proper treatment and medication.

There are a number of medications and remedies available for use by those that are afflicted with toenail fungus. The oral medications work by promoting the growth of new nails that will eventually replace the toenail that\’s infected. These oral medications usually have to be taken for 6 to 12 weeks before successfully curing the condition.

People with heart conditions or liver disorders should choose another course of treatment. Topical creams, like steroid creams, are available to treat some kinds of toenail fungus infections. However, using the creams exclusively is just not enough to cure the majority of infections that develop.

There are some things that you can do to take care of your nails and possibly prevent a fungal infection from occurring. Try to use shoes that provide your foot with good support and plenty of extra room for your toes. Pointed shoes should be avoided at all costs. Wearing socks that are manufactured from 100% cotton as well as making sure they are always clean and dry will help greatly in preventing an infection from taking place.

A final piece of advice that will help keeping your toenails in good conditions is keeping them maintained at a short length. This helps to reduce trauma to the nail from banging against hard objects or the insides of your shoes while walking.
