Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on positive and negative energies generated by food intake, environment and lifestyles. Acupuncture is one of its mainstays for sciatica nerve treatment. Despite its popularity and effectiveness in many cases, acupuncture has not undergone much scrutiny from the researchers. There are many stories that tell us about the immediate relief and permanent cure that acupuncture is capable of. The fact is that success stories get advertised while incidents where acupuncture failed to treat do not get published unless there is an unfortunate happening. Like all alternative treatments, acupuncture too does not have the backing of drug companies as there is nothing in it for them.

Conventional medicine believes that sciatica can be caused by one or more of the following reasons:

* A compression of the sciatic nerve that exits from the base of the spine.
* Compression of the sciatic nerve due to a slipped disc due to trauma or a natural process.
* Degenerative disc disease.
* The narrowing of the spinal cord due to the natural ageing process.
* Improper postures.
* A pinched nerve due to trauma or inflammation in the piriformis muscle, a condition often termed as pseudo sciatica.

There may be some other reasons for sciatica but TCM, classifies sciatica pains based on different parameters. The three kinds of sciatica pain that TCM identifies are:

* Sciatica pain that gets aggravated by cold or damp weather.
* Sciatica pain that is worse in the evening and better in the morning but aggravated by fatigue.
* Sciatica pain that is worse in the morning but aggravated by sitting still.

These parameters are used to identify the organs in the body that have been affected by negative energies and the meridians related with them are earmarked. For example, meridians between the lower back to heels are indicated when the pain is aggravated due to a damp or cold weather. Similarly, where the pain is worse in the evening and aggravated due to fatigue, a deficiency in liver or kidney function is indicated. If the pain is worse in the morning, an acupuncture expert looks at reasons related to stagnation of blood due to trauma, postural problems or something structural that is pinching or irritating the sciatic nerve.

This understanding helps the expert to identify the exact pressure points that need to be worked upon. The expert may insert sharp needles (sterilized, of course) along the path of the pain to unblock energy (Qi). This process is believed to spread out the external pathogen and activate Qi energy to eliminate pain. The specialist may also advise application of heat on the meridian points, exercise and herbs as part of the overall sciatica alternative remedies.

It is a matter of personal preferences whether to look towards acupuncture or stick to conventional drugs that have to be taken with care due to their notorious side effects. Some of the other sciatica alternative remedies like exercise, homeopathy, yogic postures and herbs are equally effective and deserve consideration. This is especially important because sciatica treatment can prove to be a lifelong process at times.

Sciatica may be a symptom and not a disease, but the pain is excruciating and may result in immobilization of the patient. The condition requires effective pain management. Natural modes of pain relief are indeed better than a prolonged use of pain relieving drugs.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common disease and it is believed that more than 10 million people in US alone have to look for an appropriate urinary tract infection cure every year. Women are affected more than men, either because of their shorter urethra, which makes it easy for accumulated bacteria to travel upwards. It is also due to the closeness of the opening of urethra to the anus and due to some other reasons that are not yet confirmed by the scientists.

Continued allopathic treatment by way of antibiotics runs the risk of side effects. It is also known that the bacteria can also develop a resistance to the existing antibiotics that have been prescribed, if the medication is used for a long time. These issues have led to a continuous exploration of different modes of treatment and alternate therapies.

If one looks beyond home, natural, homoeopathic and herbal remedies for bladder infection treatment and urinary tract infection cure; acupuncture treatment is an option that can be considered.

The word acupuncture is derived from Latin words for needle (acus) and prick (pungere) and the therapy is exactly what the name suggests. Acupuncture is a technique of inserting and manipulating needles at specific points; a process which the proponents profess can relieve pain and cure diseases.

Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and like every thing old, has evolved over time. It exists today in another form also, called classical Chinese acupuncture. Japanese and Korean acupunctures are slightly different. Modern acupuncturists use stainless steel needles of a very fine diameter suitably sterilized with ethylene oxide or by autoclave. The type and length of the needle and the extent to which it is to be inserted depends upon the style to which the acupuncturist belongs.

Whereas some studies have been instrumental in proving the pain relieving effects of acupuncture, its efficacy for curing other ailments is a debatable issue and open to doubt.

Studies performed in Norway, using standardized scientific procedures, point towards a 50% reduction in the rate of infection after getting acupuncture treatment for UTI. There is also evidence of acupuncture treatment leading to a reduction in urine retention. Urine that remains in the bladder even after urination is one of the major causes of UTI. This indicates that acupuncture therapy can be helpful in bladder infection cure too.

The debate whether acupuncture is an effective mode of treatment or simply has a placebo effect on the UTI patient will continue but there does not seem to be any harm in trying acupuncture as long as the therapist is careful about sterilization and is licensed by a competent authority to treat. As part of a urinary tract infection cure, acupuncture can be very helpful in relieving pain during infection. A prolonged acupuncture treatment can be quite effective in strengthening functions of the immune system and prevent recurrent infections.

Acupuncture originated in China and over the years has become a popular therapy across the world. It is an important component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The acupuncture process involves inserting needles at various points in the body. The basics of natural weight loss under the therapy revolve around the release of vital energy known as chi or Qi in Chinese.

Qi is considered to be the circulating life energy in Chinese philosophy. It is thought to be inherent in all things. The Chinese theory believes that Qi flows through pathways that are known as meridians. There are 20 meridians in the body out of which 12 are primary and related to specific organs or functions. The other 8 are called secondary meridians. Any imbalance in the flow of Qi through these meridians caused by a blockage within the body is considered to be the root cause of all disease and disorders including obesity.

There meridians are used by acupuncture specialist to stimulate and restore normal flow and balance of Qi. This is the process that is used for treating all disease. Modern science however believes that acupuncture needles actually stimulate the release of endorphins, a naturally occurring neurochemical that has analgesic properties. It is the excess availability of endorphins that gives a temporary sense of well being.

As far as weight loss is concerned, acupuncture attempts to restrict appetite and cravings for foods. It also eliminates excess water from the body and stimulates the pituitary gland, the master gland of the endocrine system, to burn extra fat. An acupuncturist inserts five needles, four of which are targeted at specific organs – kidneys, liver, lungs and the nervous system. The fifth one is simply inserted to calm an anxious patient. As per TCM theory, this releases the blocked energy and inhibits appetite and craving for carbohydrates and helps in general detoxification.

American acupuncturists have developed a process of ear staples for weight loss. In this process only the upper and lower part of each ear is stapled. This adapted method is less safe than the conventional method of inserting needles because needles are removed after every sitting while the ear staples are left in the ears for several days. The ear cartilage is not resistant to infection and is therefore not recommended by traditional acupuncturists.

Acupuncture treatment for weight loss has been around for years but there is no scientific proof of its efficacy besides the recently discovered release of endorphins. However, it is also not known to cause any harmful effects as long as the needles are sterilized. It does not involve ingestion of any artificial weight loss remedies whose efficacy is doubted by skeptics. Considering these aspects there seems to be no harm in trying acupuncture along with exercise and natural weight loss supplements provided they have proven credentials.
