Those who experience insomnia recognize that their sleepless nights are not merely bothersome, they can have permanent consequences. When you are short on sleep, it can have a significant impact on your ability to carry out your daily routine.

It is possible to get a prescription for medication to take care of the problem. But the negative reactions of these medications can sometimes be as disturbing as the symptoms of your insomnia. If this is the case, why not take a look at herbs that have been proven through time to be effective insomnia cures.

Consider starting with something relatively mild, such as chamomile. Chamomile has been used for hundreds of years as a way to get a good night’s sleep. It is considered to have some anti-inflammatory characteristics also. So it might help to alleviate your minor aches and pains, which you may not even be aware of. Have a cup of chamomile tea before turning in for the night for the best results.

Another herb you may want to try is lavender. This herb is widely utilized due to the fact that it is so effective at calming the nerves. It is a particularly effective treatment for people with insomnia that is caused by stress or worries. Some folks like to gently mist their pillow with some lavender oil before they fall asleep.

Passion flower is considered by many herbalists to be a highly effective natural remedy for insomnia. Not only can it calm you and help to induce sleep, it’s also known as a pain reliever. It was used by the ancient Aztecs as a sedative and analgesic.

Another favorite insomnia remedy is St John’s Wort. It’s been utilized for ages as a treatment for insomnia, as well as for other health issues like depression and anxiety.

You could also try Valerian Root. Folks have been treating their insomnia with this herb for many generations. Because of its natural sedative abilities, it is become one of the favorite herbal treatments for the treatment of insomnia. Another of its uses is as a muscle relaxant. It’s known for its sedative action against not just insomnia but also restlessness and nervous conditions.

Keep in mind that you must use any of these herbal remedies according to the instructions. The fact that they’re a natural product does not mean that there can’t be adverse reactions. Also, taking higher doses than directed won’t accelerate your treatment. And there’s the risk that it will in fact get worse.

These herbal remedies have all been established to be effective for ensuring a good night’s sleep. Just remember that it might take some trial and error till you find the one that works best for you.

I have treated many patients who had suffered with insomnia because of their back pain. Have you been up most of night with back pain? Are you desperate for a good night’s sleep? Many patients I treat for back pain had not been able to sleep in the same bad with their spouse for years. Even though they had bought different mattresses, and some were very expensive. They said it would have been worth the money just to get to some sleep.

People who suffer with back pain tend to buy different beds - some very expensive beds. Some patients have tried putting boards under their mattresses, or they sleep on the floor. Many have slept on their couches or were sleeping propped up in their recliners. They try buying different pillows: soft or contour pillows for their necks and firm body-pillows for between their knees. It is sad because they will tell me they have not slept with their spouses in years, because they hurt too much to stay in the bed. These back pain sufferers report they have the “Goldilocks” syndrome, and they actually have tried sleeping in every bed in their house. Nothing helped them for any length of time.

Many people have tried heating pads, electric blankets, playing soothing music, and leaving the television on - which can drive a spouse insane. They want to have some company while they are awake suffering. This is when back pain sufferers are tempted to order products from the late-night infomercials: diet programs, sleep aids, exercise equipment, inversion tables, vitamins and maybe even Ginsu knives. Anything that will promise a better life might be ordered. It is a viscous cycle that just does not seem to end because their pain is only the symptom of what could be a serious, underlying back problem.

Leading a sedentary life, improper posture, and sitting and peering at your computer screen can all be causes of back pain. Another reason is carrying weight around the middle. Pregnancy or simply being overweight can have the same results. Continually carrying around a child or carrying a heavy purse on one shoulder can cause back pain. Back pain can be temporary or short-term.

If you have suffered through long and agonizing, sleepless nights due your back pain, you know just how miserable this can be. If back pain is affecting your life and keeping you awake at night, you should see a doctor and find out what exactly is causing your pain. If you see your medical doctor, he or she will most likely prescribe pain medications and muscle relaxants. If your pain continues and you return to a medial doctor, then you most likely will be sent out for physical therapy. Then if your pain continues, you will be directed to finally have X-rays or an MRI to look into an actual diagnosis, or cause, of your pain.

Initially, many doctors hesitate to put too much time into diagnosing and just list your pain as “nonspecific” back pain. After the X-rays or MRIs are read, then you find out what your problem is during your next visit to the doctor. Should you have a condition such as a herniated disc or degenerative disc, or others such as spinal stenosis and facet syndrome, you most likely will be scheduled for a visit to a specialist - an orthopedic or a neurologist. At that point, it may be time for a spinal epidural, which most likely will not help for any length of time, or may not help at all. Or, surgery may be recommended.

If there is post-surgery pain, they may have to go under the care of a pain specialist. Some surgeries are successful and the symptoms are gone, others might last for two to five years or less, and some are not successful - failed surgery syndrome - at all.

To be able to relax and drift off into a warm and fuzzy state of slumber and wake up refreshed knowing that you have had a good night’s sleep has to be one of the best feelings you can encounter.

Can you imagine then how it must feel to know that as many as 1 in 5 of the population have been denied the above, simply because they suffer from insomnia a cruel condition that robs people of vital rest.

Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep and stay asleep. It can affect anyone at any time and at any age. Common signs of insomnia include:
Waking up tired and not feeling rested.
Feeling tired or sleepy throughout the day.
Having difficulty focussing on everyday tasks.
Feeling irritable and depressed.
Sleep is essential for good health. It is the body’s way of rejuvenating and repairing itself, and without it health problems such as heart disease and diabetes can occur. Indeed studies from New York and Chicago Universities have shown that a good night’s sleep can cause you to live longer and even help you to stay slim!

There are two types of insomnia, primary and secondary.
Primary insomnia is insomnia that occurs without an underlying cause.
Secondary insomnia is insomnia that is caused by an emotional, physical or neurological disorder such as stress, grief, pain, jetlag or illnesses such as dementia or Alzheimers.

Secondary insomnia is easier to treat than primary insomnia as you can usually pinpoint the cause. When it comes to sleep everybody needs are different and we should have a rough idea of how much sleep we need to function well. The following tips below are known to improve or restore the sleep of the sufferer.
We need to be in tune with our body’s natural rhythm and try to get up at the same time even on weekends.
Try not to take naps during the day.
Take moderate and regular exercise such as walking or swimming.
Drink alcohol in moderation, it may make you feel sleepy but it can cause you to wake early.
Avoid tea and coffee in the evening as it is full of caffeine and will make you more alert.
Do not eat heavy or late at night, a classic reason for insomnia. Eat a light meal 4 hours before bed and choose protein foods such as eggs, fish or bake beans as these contain tryptophan an amino acid which aids sleep.
Drink hot milk containing nutmeg as both are calming and can induce sleep.
Sprinkle a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow at night as this has a sedative affect.
Avoid doing anything mentally stimulating before bed, wind down and relax using meditation and yoga to prepare the body for sleep.
Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and well ventilated. Turn off the television or the computer.
Play soft music and make sure that the bed is comfortable.
Doing any or more of the above should encourage sleep to come back and allow you the privilege of a good nights rest.
